Important information for patients and visitors

There are major changes in Chalmers Street and surrounding areas as part of work to build the CBD and South East Light Rail.

To allow construction to take place, access will change on July 31 for all road users including drivers, taxis, buses, pedestrians and cyclists. During this time, localised traffic management will be in place to assist motorists and alternatives will always be maintained for pedestrians.

Patients, visitors and suppliers coming to Sydney Dental Hospital should allow extra time for their journey and plan ahead.

How do I get to Sydney Dental Hospital?

By car
Vehicle access to Sydney Dental Hospital will be maintained at all times during construction.

Patients and visitors, including those with accessibility requirements, can be picked up and dropped off directly outside the Hospital in Chalmers Street. This access will be limited and there is no parking available on Chalmers Street.

If you are driving to the Hospital please follow detour signs and use Elizabeth Street northbound to access Chalmers Street.

Please note:

  • Chalmers Street will be closed to traffic between Randle Street and Eddy Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic in Chalmers Street will be diverted to Elizabeth Street via Randle Street.
  • Randle Street will become northbound (instead of southbound as it was previously).
  • Elizabeth Street will become two-way between Eddy Avenue and Randle Street.
  • There will be limited accessible parking at the front of the hospital, for vehicles with Disability Parking Permits only.

Drivers should take extra care, watch for pedestrians and follow directions from traffic controllers.

By taxi
The closest taxi zones in the area are on Randle Street between Randle Lane and Elizabeth Street and on Chalmers Street south of Devonshire Street. Taxis will be permitted to pick up and drop passengers at the entrance to Sydney Dental Hospital by following the signs and turning left at Elizabeth Street.

By train and pedestrian access
During the work, footpaths will be maintained but may be altered. Patients and visitors coming from Central Station's South Concourse should cross Chalmers Street near the station exit. Extra care should be taken when crossing Elizabeth Street near the intersection with Foveaux Street as traffic will be travelling in both directions. Pedestrians are advised to follow signage and the guidance of traffic controllers.

By bus
The bus stop on Chalmers Street near Central Station (Stand H) is closed. The closest stops are in Chalmers Street near Prince Alfred Park (Stand G) or on Eddy Avenue. Customers with accessible needs are encouraged to use the stop in Chalmers Street.

Hospital deliveries
Delivery vehicles accessing Sydney Dental Hospital's loading dock in Chalmers Street should follow the directional signs to turn left at Elizabeth Street. Please allow extra travel time for deliveries and be guided by local traffic controllers.
