For Patients and their Families/Carers

Speaking your language - helping our community access healthcare

Professional health care interpreters are available if you need help understanding or speaking in English. Health care interpreters are available in all community languages, including Australian Sign Language (Auslan).  Interpreter services may be provided by face to face or telephone interpreting.

You may have a family member or friend present to provide you with support, but all communication about your care should be through a professional health care interpreter. Health care interpreters are trained in medical terminology and the health system.

Interpreter services are free and interpreters are bound by a code of conduct that requires them to keep all information confidential.

It is your right to ask for an interpreter if one is not offered to you. The health care staff will book the interpreter for you.

If you need to use an interpreter to contact your health service, please use the Translation and Interpreter Service (TIS).  Please call 131 450 and tell the operator the language that you speak and the name and telephone number of the service you wish to contact. This is a free, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week service.
