Prehabilitation
For patients undergoing major colorectal surgery, it is important to understand the condition of your health and fitness can impact on your post-surgical outcomes. Prehabilitation is the practice of improving a patient's functional capacity before surgery with the aim of improving postoperative recovery. At Concord Hospital, the Prehabilitation Program within our Colorectal Department is offered to patients who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer and are planned for major bowel surgery. The Prehabilitation Program includes individually tailored and supervised exercise sessions with an exercise physiologist; dietary information and takin g protein supplements from a dietitian and receiving phone calls of support from a colorectal nurse.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery
The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program for the Colorectal Department started in 2013. The ERAS Program promotes best evidence- based practice to improve perioperative care related to nutrition, mobility after surgery, pain control and fluid management. The program uses a multidisciplinary team approach. As a result, patients who undergo major elective bowel surgery are expected to make a faster recovery, shortening their hospital stay and reducing surgical complications.
The ERAS Program was developed to ensure patients receive a consistently high quality of individualised care during their recovery. Before your planned operation, you will see the ERAS Nurse Coordinator who will give you information about preparing for the operation and the care you will receive post operatively during your hospital stay. The ERAS Nurse Coordinator will also provide follow up phone calls after discharge from hospital to ensure you continue to recover well at home.
