Nursing Student Placements

The Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Service acknowledges that an encouraging and supportive clinical experience is conducive to positive learning outcomes. The value of student clinical placements cannot be overemphasized.

Before You Start

On the first day of placement, students are to present at the specified time and meeting place as advised by your university clinical placement coordinators. Below is additional information for each inpatient mental health facility that will be useful to know before you start your placement with us.

Learning Opportunities

During mental health placements many familiar clinical tasks, routines and structure are less apparent and you may be feeling lost. The learning that occurs in the mental health setting has a different focus to that of your general health placements. As some of the situations of mental health consumers may be confronting, debriefing with your clinical facilitator is important. You will also be supported by your allocated nurse preceptor and clinical nurse educators while on placement in mental health.
