Active Ageing

Staying Active as we grow older is an important part of being healthy and increasing our sense of feeling well and full of energy.

Staying Active also has these benefits:

  • keeps our heart healthy and strong
  • keeps us fit and able to move with ease
  • improves our balance and muscle strength
  • makes everyday living easier allowing us to do the things we love

We run the following programs to support older adults. Click on the programs below to find out more.

Wellbeing Programs

  Healthy & Active for Life Online (HALO) V

Healthy & Active for Life Online (HALO)Healthy and Active for Life Online is a FREE 10-week healthy lifestyle program for adults aged 60 years* and over 45+ years for Aboriginal people. 

Healthy & Active Online Flyer

Healthy & Active Online Flyer for Aboriginal People

This is an online module-based learning program with weekly phone support provided by our qualified staff. 

Topics covered during this program include:

  • healthy plate and serving sizes
  • goal setting
  • sugar, fat, salt, label reading
  • calcium and vitamin D
  • fibre and incontinence

Who is the program for?

Adults who are over 60 years old and living independently

Anyone not attending regular exercise groups

Currently only available in English

A 10-week program begins at the start of each school term.

  Stepping OnV

Steping onStepping On is a seven week program designed for people who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling.

The program is:

  • for those over 65 years of age
  • for people who are living at home
  • evidence-based and proven to reduce falls in older people living in the community

This program is unsuitable for:

  • people with memory problems
  • certain progressive neurological disorders and
  • people who are totally dependent on a walking frame

Virtual Stepping On

We are also running Virtual Stepping On which will suit those who would prefer to take part from home at this time.

Information for Medical & Health Professionals

Our Active Ageing team is ready and willing to take referrals from Health Professionals for older adults clients.

At present we have two programs you can refer patients to:

  Stepping On - Information for Medical & Health Professionals V

Stepping On is a falls prevention program for over 65s. It is designed for those at risk of a fall or who have had a fall in the last year. It is a:

  • 7 week education program
  • incorporating specific strength & balance exercises
  • utilising expert guest speakers on a range of specific topics

Local health professionals present specific topic areas with the latest evidence/information such as medication, vision and safe footwear.

Each session provides time for discussing issues, action planning and includes homework e.g. incorporating program learning into daily activities.

This program is also available as a virtual program in an online group learning setting.


  Healthy & Active for Life Online – Information for Medical & Health Professionals V

Healthy & Active for Life is a new program focusing on promoting physical activity and healthy eating with a secondary focus on falls prevention.

This FREE program is for older adults:

  • aged 60 +
  • inactive but motivated to increase their health & wellbeing

Program details:

  • the program will run once weekly, 2 hours per session for 10 weeks
  • it will include 60 mins of circuit exercises, 15 mins tea break and socialisation and 45 mins facilitated discussion and activities on a healthy diet

Participants will be:

  • provided with detailed instructions on how to do the exercises to continue at home and factsheets on the various nutrition based topics
  • actively referred to the Get Healthy Service and supported to continue with the exercises as part of the coaching for a further 6 months
  • encouraged to join a local community based exercise program

At the moment this program is only available as an online modular learning program with phone support from qualified health professionals.

Training for Professionals Interested in Delivering these Programs

 

  Healthy & Active for Life Program TrainingV

The training is provided for physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and Cert IV fitness professionals who would be interested in facilitating a Healthy & Active for Life program.

This will cover:

  • one full day training provided by Ministry of Health
  • all resources are provided to you

Potential facilitators will need to:

  • have experience working with older adults in a group setting
  • have a qualification in physiotherapy, exercise physiology or Cert IV fitness


  Stepping On Program Training V

The training is provided for health and/or fitness professionals who would be interested in facilitating a Stepping On program.

This will cover:

  • one full day training provided by Ministry of Health
  • a half day of local training provided by SLHD
  • all resources are provided to you

Potential facilitators will need to:

  • have experience working with older adults in a group setting
  • attend a Stepping On Program as a Co Facilitator prior to delivering a Stepping On Program

  Health Walk Volunteer V

Are you interested in becoming a Walk Leader for Sydney LHD Active Ageing program?

We have partnered with the Heart Foundation’s Walking Program scheme.

Details:

  • full training and support is provided
  • you would deliver a low paced 30-60min Health Walk for older adults
  • a commitment of 1-2 hours per week would be required
  • you could lead this on your own or co-lead
