History & Achievement

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital has a long standing tradition of medical education and training. In 1884, the first 14 medical students were accepted, making RPA the first teaching hospital in Australia. RPA continues to be a leader in undergraduate, prevocational and vocational training and prides itself on having an established and strong culture of teaching and education at all levels.

The RPA Basic Physician Training Program has proven track record of exemplary training. Our trainee cohorts have a high rate of success in the RACP Examinations and in obtaining Advanced Training positions. Not only is this a reflection of the program's ability to consistently produce highly skilled and knowledgeable young physicians, but also to cultivate our trainees'  personal and professional development as they advance into clinician leaders of the future.

Our pass rates in the RACP Written and Clinical Exams in recent times are shown in the following table. We have had consistently high results over 15 years, passing large cohorts of trainees, approximately 25-30 candidates each year.

In addition, the program has trained the Bryan Hudson Medal recipient three times in recent history, awarded to the Basic Physician Trainee who scores the highest combined score in the RACP Written and Clinical Exam. These trainees are:
