We say thank you to our nurses and midwives
Sydney Local Health District hosted a range of events to mark International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife across the month of May.
All staff members were invited to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable role our 5300 nurses and midwives play in our hospitals, outpatient clinics and community health centres.
This year we welcomed 263 new nurses and midwives, who have chosen to begin their rewarding career with us.
We are very fortunate in NSW to have some of the best maternal healthcare services in the world. About 7000 babies come into the world each year at our hospitals at RPA and Canterbury, making our maternity services among the busiest in the state. Our District boasts a team of 500 midwives, including 36 new recruits this year, who bring compassion and dedication to the antenatal and postnatal care of hundreds of women each and every day.
To mark International Day of the Midwife, RPA hosted a birthing kit assembly day. Dozens of staff members volunteered to pack kits containing the bare essentials to help reduce the risk of infection for women in countries where women have little or no assistance during childbirth.
About 800 kits were assembled and sent to the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia, who will distribute them to vulnerable women in developing countries and regions that experience a disproportionate share of maternal and newborn mortality.
To kick off the celebrations, Chief Executive Dr Teresa Anderson announced Ms Ivanka Komusanac has been appointed Director of Nursing and Midwifery.
Ivanka has been acting in the role since October last year and has demonstrated her commitment to providing quality leadership to ensure highly technical, skilled, patient and family centred care is provided to our patients.
BBQ lunches, talent shows, singing and dancing and fun and games took place across our facilities at Balmain, Canterbury, Concord and RPA. Awards were presented for outstanding service and commitment.
