About
Sydney is one of the leading public health districts in Australia. It is known for excellence in healthcare.
It is home to world-renowned hospitals Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Repatriation General, as well as Sydney Dental, Balmain and Canterbury Hospitals. Clinical services include Aboriginal Health, Allied, Drug, Oral, Community, Population and Mental Health as well as BreastScreen NSW, Thomas Walker Hospital and Tresillian Family Care Centres. Our Clinical Streams include Aged Care, Rehabilitation and General Medicine, Cancer Services, Cardiovascular, Critical Care, Gastro and Liver, Medical Imaging, Neurosciences, Bone and Joint, Plastics and Trauma Surgery and Women’s Health, Neonatology and Paediatrics.
The district hosts world-leading biomedical, clinical, health services and public health research. The District has a strong role as a provider of education to clinicians and managers. The District has many leading clinicians, researchers, research institutes and research centres contributing to the translation of research into innovative, evidence-based practice.
Sydney Local Health District hosts an annual Innovation and Research Symposium to foster partnerships, networking and collaboration among its staff, stakeholders and healthcare community.
Northern Sydney Local Health District provides a diverse range of services from many different facilities. The District operates public hospitals including Royal North Shore, Ryde, Hornsby, Mona Vale, Manly Hospital and Macquarie Hospital. It also has 19 community health centres, 25 early childhood centres and other facilities including aged care and community mental health.
In addition to providing care to almost one million residents in Northern Sydney the District also operates state-wide services in areas including: major trauma, spinal cord injury, severe burns and neonatal intensive care.

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. It also provides tertiary care for people from across New South Wales, and in particular regional areas, as well as treating patients in search of specialised treatments like cancer care.
Western Sydney Local Health District's major facilities include Auburn, Cumberland, Blacktown, Mount Druitt and Westmead hospitals. It also works with partners to deliver health services, and universities and educational and training services to undertake research.
The Children's Hospital at Westmead, part of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, treats 80,000 sick and injured children each year. It is the largest paediatric centre in NSW and provides care for children from NSW, Australia and across the Pacific Rim. The Hospital's clinical expertise, community education, advocacy for improved child health and ground-breaking research into childhood illnesses make it a world-class institution.

The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), established by the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation, is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the world's first stand-alone research facility focused on asbestos-related cancer. ADRI is located in the Bernie Banton Centre, named in honour of the late asbestos diseases campaigner, Bernie Banton.
ADRI comprises of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, including oncology-oriented clinicians, epidemiologists, molecular biologists, quality-of-life researchers and experts in biotechnology.

The Centenary Institute is a world-leading independent Medical Research Institute. Its strength is in uncovering disease mechanisms and applying this knowledge to improve diagnostics and treatments for patients and find cures for some of the most chronic diseases affecting today's society. The Centenary Institute focuses its research efforts in three key areas: cancer, inflammation and cardiovascular disease.
The Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is dedicated to advancing the treatment and prevention of childhood diseases, so every child has the opportunity for a healthy start to life. CMRI was Australia's first paediatric medical research facility and pioneered microsurgery, immunisations against lethal childhood illnesses and care for premature babies, all of which has improved the lives of countless Australian children over the last 58 years. Today, CMRI is the site of world-leading research in areas such as cancer, neurobiology, embryology and gene therapy.

The Heart Research Institute is a world-class research institute and a hub for scientific excellence in cardiovascular research. As one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia, the Westmead Institute for Medical Research brings together many disciplines and skills to improve the health and well-being of people in the Western Sydney region and beyond. Its vision is to attract great minds to do great research which is translated to improve health for patients and communities.
Its researchers are world leaders in breast and ovarian cancer, melanoma and leukaemia, diabetes, major infectious diseases including HIV; autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis; kidney, liver, heart, respiratory and eye diseases; mental health and neuroscience.
The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research strives to improve the respiratory and sleep health of Australians through world-class research, care and education. Its team of 200 medical researchers is dedicated to investigating the causes of disease, finding better treatments and translating their discoveries into new clinical practice. The Institute is determined that its work creates a better life for people living with lung conditions and sleep disorders.
The Kolling Institute is the longest-running medical research institute in NSW. Its purpose is to advance patient outcomes and turn discoveries into realities.
