Wearing masks

Keep each other safe during COVID-19 and wear a mask when you:

  • can't keep 1.5 metres away from others
  • are indoors, in close-contact settings where physical distancing is hard to maintain (such as public transport or supermarkets)
  • are in areas with higher risk of transmission (such as an identified COVID-19 case location, hospitality staff working in restaurants, pubs and clubs, or anyone attending places of worship)
  • are sick and seeking medical care or going to get tested

Important tips for wearing your face mask safely:

  • Wash your hands before and after touching your mask
  • Avoid touching the outside of the mask once you have applied it. Only touch the bands or ties when putting on or taking off your mask.
  • Make sure the mask covers your nose, mouth and chin
  • Masks can be worn for four hours unless wet or soiled
  • Single use masks should be discarded after use. Wash reusable masks after each use

It is important to remember that masks alone cannot protect you from COVID-19 - maintain physical distancing and wash your hands regularly, even while wearing a mask.
