Research shows that regular exercise can help manage a range of health conditions, assist in preventing falls and provide social benefits for older adults. However, exercise programs that cater for this group are limited and often costly.
A range of suitable and affordable physical activities are needed so that older adults, as well as those from other disadvantaged groups, can achieve the level of physical activity needed to stay healthy.
SHARE is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a wide range of low cost exercise classes in the community. These are designed primarily for men and women aged over 50 years. SHARE classes have successfully run for more than 25 years and include:
The programs are available at a number of locations in the inner west and southern Sydney suburbs. SHARE also provides and tailors classes to suit the needs of community groups and develops programs in partnership with organisations such as local councils and licensed clubs.
The Health Promotion Service is represented on the SHARE management committee. The committee, which also includes fitness leader and participant representatives, oversees and supports implementation of the SHARE program to ensure it provides high quality classes that are suitable for older adults.
SHARE employs accredited fitness leaders who are registered with Fitness NSW. They are experienced in teaching exercise to older adults and are provided with regular training opportunities.
SHARE’s programs, class enrolments and partners are recorded, monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis by both the management committee and Local Health Districts.
SHARE publishes an annual report, which is presented every year at the annual general meeting. It provides an overview of SHARE’s programs and services plus president’s report, general manager’s and financial reports.
