Accommodation services for patients and carers

If you live more than 100 kilometres from RPA, you are able to claim some reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs through a government assistance program (IPTAAS - Isolated Patient's Travel Assistance Scheme). For more information, call 02 9716 7284, your local IPTAAS office or the RPA Hospital Social Work Department on 02 9515 9902.

For patients requiring daily medical and/or nursing assistance, accommodation can be arranged at numerous local hospitals including Strathfield Private and Metropolitan Rehabilitation. These accommodation options are offered on a short term basis because of the enormous demand.

Other accommodation can be found at the several hotels and motels within walking distance of RPA. A listing of local accommodation options and contacts is available here.


There is an ATM inside the hospital foyer (located on Level 5 off Missenden Road).
The Commonwealth Bank (COM), National Australia Bank (NAB), Westpac and ANZ all have branches on King St, Newtown.

Chapel and Chaplaincy Services

The Hospital has a Chapel. All patients, visitors and staff are welcome.

A visit to you on the ward by a Chaplain can also be arranged. Please ask a member of staff if your require this.

Quiet and Reflection Rooms

There are a number of Quiet Rooms available throughout the hospital on most levels. These rooms may be used for quiet meditation, prayer or a place to escape in times of stress to gather your thoughts. Ward staff are able to direct you to the nearest Quiet Room and ensure that the room is available.


The closest chemist is in the main RPA hospital foyer or in the RPA Medical Centre on Carillon Avenue. Alternatively, there are pharmacies on King Street and in the Broadway Shopping Centre.

Conference Facilities - Kerry Packer Education Centre

RPA is one of the country's premier teaching hospitals. The Kerry Packer Education Centre (KPEC)

With a total of 23 venues, including three major conference rooms, Kerry Packer Education Centre is an ideal venue for health-related conferences, seminars and workshops. Videoconferencing and web-casting services are available, in addition to all the essential audiovisual requirements for contemporary presentations, and audiovisual staff are available upon request to provide technical support.

Justice of the Peace

There are many Justices of the Peace (JPs) on staff. If you need the service of a JP, please ask one of the ward staff.


The RPA Museum collects and preserves the history of one of Australia’s largest and busiest hospitals.

Located on L8 in the King George V building, Missenden Road, opposite the hospital main entrance, the Museum is free and open to the public.

There is a newsagent at RPA inside the main hospital foyer located on Level 5.

Post Office

A small Australia Post Office is located on the ground floor of the King George V building - opposite the main entrance to RPA on Missenden Road.

Public Phones

Public phones are located throughout the hospital. In addition, you can hire a bedside phone through the cashier's office inside the main entrance of the hospital. The cashier accepts credit cards and eftpos.


The Jacaranda Café (the hospital cafeteria) has a full range of food and drinks and is situated on level 4 of "E" block (the main hospital building).

Café Deli Marche is located Level 5 of the main hospital building.

There are many Café's on Missenden Road where you can get coffee and meals to eat-in or take-away.

There are also vending machines throughout the hospital.

Restaurants abound in the areas surrounding RPA. King Street, Newtown is a good first stop with very reasonably priced food including Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, Spanish, Mexican and café-style Australian.

Glebe Point Road is also known as a Sydney 'Eat Street' with everything from gourmet pizza to vegetarian food and even Nepalese cuisine! For the budget conscious, the Camperdown Bowling Club (on Mallett Street) has inexpensive meals and drinks.


The local supermarkets are located on Missenden Road (5 Star), King St (Franklins) and the Broadway Shopping Centre (cnr Greek and Bay Streets, Broadway), where there is a Coles, Kmart, Target and Bi-Lo.

Glebe Point Road has a number of organic and health food shops.

There are many interesting and sometimes quirky specialty shops on King Street, Newtown and Glebe Point Road, Glebe. The CBD is a short bus ride away.

The Glebe markets are a colourful Sydney institution, on at the Glebe Public School (183 Glebe Point Rd) and held from 9 am to 4 pm every Saturday. The stall holders sell everything from original designer clothing, arts and crafts, jewellery and pre-loved attire to bric a brac, books, records and organic fruit and veggies.

Volunteer Services

The volunteers of RPA generously give their time to assist hospital staff providing for the comfort and welfare of patients. The volunteers undertake various non-clinical duties such as:

  • provide tea and coffee to patients in clinic areas
  • guide people around the hospital
  • provide patients with books to read
  • perform special tasks for patients, e.g. post letters
  • wash clothes for patients who have no one to perform this task
  • arrange and water patient's flowers
  • visit patients
  • provide practical and emotional support

Elderly visitors can access a free wheelchair service to transport them around the hospital, however this depends on availability of the wheelchairs. Please ask at the admissions desk located in the main foyer.
