Back Transport Team

The Neonatal Early Discharge & Home Support Team also fulfils the role of returning babies to a Nursery closer to where the family lives. A significant proportion of babies managed in the NICU have been transferred to RPA either before or after birth from regional & rural NSW. The close proximity of RPA to Sydney Airport makes it an obvious destination for mothers or babies being transferred from the country. When babies have graduated from intensive care to special care, they are returned to their local Base Hospital's Special Care Unit. This has the double advantages of freeing up beds at RPA to make room for new admissions, and of reducing the family dislocation and expenses involved in their baby being so distant from their home.

The back-transfer team utilises our own dedicated Newborn Transport ambulance for transfers with the metropolital area. For more distant transfers, we charter small aircraft. The team also transfers babies between RPA and one or other of Sydney's two Children's Hospitals, for specialist review or surgery.

This service provides us with very significant cost savings, and has the bonus that the babies are cared for in transit by highly experienced Neonatal Nurses who are aware of the baby's and family's needs.
