Our clinicians and community health professionals honoured

We are very proud to announce several District clinicians and staff members are among those being recognised for their outstanding service or exceptional achievement in the Australia Day Honours.

Professors Ron Grunstein, Paul Haber, Matthew Kiernan and Matthew Peters have been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Professor Grunstein has been recognised for significant service to medical education and research in the field of sleep disorders. Professor Grunstein is a staff specialist physician in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at RPA.

Professor Haber has been recognised for significant service to medical education and research, particularly in the field of addiction medicine. He has been a senior staff specialist at RPA since 1998. He is Clinical Director of the District’s Drug Health Service.

Professor Kiernan has been recognised for significant service to medicine, and to medical education, in the field of neurology. He is the former head of the Department of Neurology at RPA and is currently the Co-Director, Discovery and Translation, at the Brain and Mind Centre.

Professor Peters has been recognised for significant service to thoracic medicine, to medical education, and to professional organisations. He is Head of the Department of Thoracic Medicine at Concord Hospital and has held the chair of various hospital councils and committees.

A number of other District staff have been awarded a Medal in the General Division (OAM).

Shane Brown is the Healthy Living Pathways Manager working in Clinical Services Integration in the Redfern/Waterloo community. He joined the District last year after three decades with Weave Community Services, including as chief executive. He has been recognised for service to the community through social welfare organisations.

Dr Russell Lain has been recognised for service to dentistry. Dr Lain is a senior clinical specialist at Sydney Dental Hospital and former staff dentist. As a forensic odontologist he was part of the response to the Bali bombings, the Boxing Day tsunami, and flight MH17 which crashed in the Ukraine.

RPA palliative care clinical nurse consultant Joan Ryan has been recognised for service to nursing. Ms Ryan has vast experience in palliative care specialist nursing within the acute, community and in-patient setting.

Lydia Visintin, a Melanoma Clinical Nurse Consultant at RPA and the Melanoma Institute Australia, has also been recognised for service to nursing. Ms Visintin has been a Registered Nurse since 1990.

The Order of Australia is the principal and most prestigious means of recognising outstanding members of the community at a national level.

The awards and appointments were announced by the Governor-General and Chancellor of the Order of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd).

Recipients will be invited to attend investitures around Australia in the coming months to receive the insignia of their appointment/award.
