Getting smart with technology
A new ICT 'Smart Room' which simulates the digital hospital environment is now available for student and staff training at Concord Hospital.
With the continued digital transformation of our hospitals, the state's first 'Smart Room' capable of mimicking the digital hospital environment has opened at Concord Hospital to support staff and student training.
The District's Information and Communication Technology Services team, in partnership with The University of Sydney, Cerner and technology vendors Hospital Products Australia, Hill Rom and Zebra have created the ICT Smart Room.
The lab room was converted to a training environment which simulates clinical practice and demonstrates the technology systems in use across hospitals in Sydney Local Health District.
"This is the first 'smart room' training environment of its kind in a hospital in NSW – another leading technology innovation created and delivered by Sydney Local Health District with the support of our partners," the District's Chief Executive, Dr Teresa Anderson said.
The room features two patient beds, one reflecting a standard ward and the other an Intensive Care Unit, each linked to a computer on wheels with access to all clinical programs available in the electronic medical record (eMR) including CareAware VitalsLink™ device integration, PowerChart ECG™, patient barcoding and scanning and the locally-developed electronic patient journey board.
The District's acting Chief Medical Information Officer, Dr Angus Ritchie, said the room uses wireless device integration to reflect current technologies.
"The interactive bedside setting allows staff and students to simulate clinical situations and by doing so, improve their skills, proficiency in the eMR and the delivery of high quality patient care.
"As we look to the future and continue to develop and test new eMR programs, the Smart Room will provide a simulation environment to trial new technologies and then train staff of all levels of experience."
The training environment will be used by medical, nursing and allied health students from The University of Sydney as well as for training sessions for Sydney Local Health District staff.
The Smart Room is located in the Medical Education Centre at Concord Hospital, within lab 2 of the Concord Clinical School. For more information, contact Jacqueline Laurens, Health Informatics Team Manager Jacqueline.Laurens@health.nsw.gov.au
