Living Well photography competition
Our community shares images of their favourite places during Mental Health Month
Sydney Local Health District's Living Well Photo Competition has wrapped up with an award ceremony recognising the top entries in four categories.
Allan Sparkes, Deputy Commissioner of the NSW Mental Health Commission, presented certificates to the winners at a ceremony at the Professor Marie Bashir Centre in Camperdown.
This year's theme was 'My Favourite Place' and the judges scored each entry based on how the photograph, title and description aligned with the theme.
First prize in the main category went to Cliff Philipiah's 'You Light Up My Life', a photo inspired by his seven-year-old daughter practicing ballet in their driveway.
"My favourite place is my own home, where I am gifted with being able to spend time with the family that I have. I never feel happier than when I am with my wife and children," he said.
"Home isn't just a place... it truly is where the heart is".
16-year-old Ben Cantelo was awarded second place for his photo 'Snow lights', a stunning image of a campsite on Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak.
"It makes me feel relaxed, as though I could reach out and touch the stars," Ben said.
Ben taught himself how to use a DSLR camera following the passing of his grandfather three years ago.
His mum Amanda Davis said since Ben was diagnosed with autism and anxiety earlier this year, photography has become a hobby he finds comfort in.
"He sees details in things that the rest of us just don't see," Amanda said.
"This photography competition was a wonderful thing that came at the right time. He's been grinning from ear to ear the whole week."
A total of 125 entries were received for the competition this year.
Coordinator Asif Iqbal the standard was impressive. "The competition is getting better every year, both in quality and the participation," he said.
