Exploring ways to improve the experience of our patients and the people important to them
We shared many laughs, a few tears and some wise words at our Patient and Family Experience Symposium during Innovation Week.
More than 150 people – staff, community members, patients and their families – gathered at the Centre for Education and Workforce Development at Rozelle.
We were inspired by Melinda Cruz, who founded the charity and support group Miracle Babies after her three premature babies were cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care.
The determination of the Demand Management Unit’s Tracy Millen and Dr Sinead Ni Bhraonain to get our patients up, dressed and moving had us vowing to get as many people as possible out of their pyjamas and hospital gowns and into day clothes.
Joe Cassaniti, a master pasta maker from Haberfield, told us how special it was to have his Partners in Care - wife Antoinette, his sons and his in-laws – spend time with him every day as he rehabilitated from a brainstem stroke in Balmain Hospital.
Consumer Advisor Kylie Scott, who has Down Syndrome, reminded us to look for the value people with a disability can bring, rather than their limitations.
The story of Environmental Services staff member Azra Imsirovic and her special connection to transplant patient Alan Crawford and his wife Barbara highlighted the impact we all can have on our patients and their families. Watch the incredible video of their story here.
Dr Fiona Kerr, Founder and CEO of the Neurotech Institute, explained the science behind the importance and benefits of simple human interaction.
The most touching moments came from the members of the Dementia Mens Café – a group of men who care for their wives or mothers with dementia. The support group, set up by our staff, is an outlet for them to share their experiences, their frustrations and their advice for coping. Their wise words, such as “Infinite patience is important” and “To be able to cope, you have to accept the situation”, were appreciated by everyone in the audience.
