Dr Timothy Gray recognised for outstanding contribution to Concord Hospital

The 2020 Pride of Concord Medal has been won by Dr Timothy Gray, a Staff Specialist in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the hospital.

The General Manager of Concord Hospital, Dr Genevieve Wallace, presented the Medal to Dr Gray during a virtual staff forum.

“Dr Gray is collaborative, passionate and incredibly hardworking. His work reflects the qualities and values that underpin the Pride of Concord Medal,” Dr Wallace said.

The annual award recognises staff who have made a significant contribution to the Hospital or the surrounding community. It was first awarded in 2015.

Dr Gray was surprised but delighted to be named this year’s winner.

“The previous winners of this honour have been role models for me, so I am surprised but very grateful,” Dr Gray said.

“I have been very fortunate to have the support of Professor Tom Gottlieb, Head of Infectious Diseases, who has generously encouraged my career development.

Today will go down as one of the most significant in my professional career,” he said.

Dr Gray has played an integral leadership role in the response to COVID-19 at Concord Hospital.

“Dr Gray had gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of staff and patients and followed up with those who returned from quarantine,” Dr Teresa Anderson AM, the Chief Executive of Sydney Local Health District, said.

Dr Anderson’s comments were echoed by the District’s Executive Director of Operations, Dr Tim Sinclair who described Dr Gray as a “phenomenal clinician.”

“I couldn’t think of a more deserving person for this award," Dr Sinclair said.

In addition to the Medal, Dr Gray was presented with a gold lion pin set in diamonds, a cheque for $5000 to put towards professional development and a dinner voucher.

A respected and committed clinician and innovator, Dr Gray joined the hospital as a Microbiology Registrar in 2011 building close affiliations across multiple disciplines.

As Chair of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, he has developed digital innovations which have resulted in Concord Hospital achieving some of its highest scores on national benchmarks for use of antibiotic medications.

His colleagues describe him as a patient teacher and effective collaborator who gently and persistently educates the medical workforce to change antibiotic prescribing behaviour.

Dr Gray has twice been awarded the Commonwealth of Australia Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal, recognising his humanitarian service overseas in hazardous circumstances.

And, as member of the Australian Medical Assistance team (AusMAT), he has provided medical care and support during some of the most devastating natural disasters and public health crises around the world.
