SLHD Animal Welfare Committee (SLHD-AWC)

Introduction of Fee Schedule effective from 1 July 2026

Applicants for an Animal Research Authority to be issued by SLHD-AWC are required to pay an application fee and annual renewal fee for each protocol to help defray costs associated with the review of applications and the periodic external review of the AWC’s operation.

Once a project has been approved by the SLHD-AWC an Animal Research Authority (ARA) will be issued for the first 12 months of the project. During this project approval period, the researcher is required to submit an annual report prior to each anniversary of the project approval date and may request renewal for a further 12 months.

Renewal applications for second and third years attract a lesser fee of $50 annually payable at the time of renewal. Ordinarily, extensions of the ARA beyond 3 years will not be approved, however extensions may occasionally be granted in extenuating circumstances, and a fourth-year renewal extension will also attract a renewal fee. Breeding and animal health surveillance protocols (e.g. using sentinel animals to monitor animal and environment safety) are exempt from fees.

At the end of the project approval period (and having reached the end of the ARA’s term) if the researcher wishes to continue to work on the project, even if the project title is unchanged, they will need to submit a new fully documented standalone project application form to the SLHD-AWC for approval for another 3-year or lesser period. The new application should be current and contextualize the work already performed. It will attract a new “initial SLHD-AWC review” charge.

Amendment applications that do not seek to extend the project duration within a period of currency of an ARA do not trigger any fees.
