Institutional Biosafety - How to Apply

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) reviews proposals for research involving the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) to ensure the research meets the requirements of the Gene Technology Regulations 2001. The IBC assists supervisors with obtaining proper authorisation for their research.

GMO dealings
The use, transport or storage of a GMO is known as a GMO dealing.
The classes of GMO dealings that are most relevant to medical research are:
Exempt Dealings
Notifiable Low Risk Dealings (NLRDs) (PC1, PC2 or PC3)
Dealings Not Involving Intentional Release (DNIRs)

The Gene technology Regulations 2001 provide information about each class of GMO dealing. All work with GMOs (including those licenced by the OGTR) must be reviewed by the IBC before commencing. If you are considering submitting a proposal for work involving GMOs please contact the IBC Executive Officer (EO) in advance for advice about the application process and forms.

Guidelines on regulatory requirements under the Gene Technology Act 2000 for human clinical trials involving genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be accessed here.

Forms
The forms for exempt and NLRD applications are available through the IBC Office. You may need to register for access. Please contact the IBC Executive Officer for details.
The form for a DNIR application is available on the OGTR website. It is recommended to contact the IBC EO before completing or submitting. The form for OGTR certification of a Physical Containment Facility is on the OGTR website and application is made directly to the OGTR. Please see the IBC Meeting Schedule for the closing and meeting dates.
