Introduction to Education and Professional Development

The educational team in the Intensive Care Service (ICS) are committed to fostering a learning environment, centred on evidenced based nursing. They are committed to promoting professional development in the critical care and specialty fields. The team consists of three full time Clinical Nurse Educator positions and a Clinical Nurse Consultant working across the ICS floor, providing educational support seven days a week.

The support and educational initiatives involve:

  • Orientation of new staff
  • Bedside teaching and clinical support
  • In house workshops and study days in all aspects of critical care
  • Clinical skills assessments and competency assessment
  • Contribution to the UTS Grad Cert in Critical Care
  • UTS clinical accreditation program assessments
  • Daily in-service sessions on a wide variety of topics
  • Lecturing in the ICS, RPAH and at postgraduate level for colleges and universities
  • Facilitation of educational resources and literature
  • Encouragement and guidance of staff, promoting personal and professional development
  • Encouragement and support of nursing staff undertaking post graduate qualifications
  • Performance Appraisals
