"I am a Gumbaynggirr man from Bowraville. I have worked in SLHD for three years and am currently working in Environmental Services as a Porter/Cleaner. I started as a casual porter/cleaner and after a year I was made permanent full-time. I applied for the porter/cleaner role after being told that Concord Hospital was looking for Indigenous porters/cleaners and sent my resume through to the HR Manager and got an interview which I passed.
Things I enjoy most about working in SLHD are the job the people and it's really good to work in a hospital. The steps I took to get to the role I'm in today are never taking a day off, working hard and always being punctual.
I feel an achievement I have made since starting is job security being permanent and knowing I have a job to come to as well as being able to talk to both patients and staff."
Tracey Goolagong - Retail Assistant (Cafeteria Services)
"I am a Wiradjuri woman from Griffith. I have worked in SLHD for four years my current role is Hospital Assistant/Retail in Food Services. I applied through Yarn'n and started in Food Services as a temporary full-time hospital assistant.
What I enjoy most about working in SLHD are that the people are lovely, it's a relaxing job and my team is friendly. Steps I took to get in the role I'm in today are applying through Yarn'n as a temporary full-time hospital assistant, completing a hospitality course and then I was encouraged to apply for the permanent position.
I feel I have achieved since starting customer service skills, confidence, cash handling skills and being able to do leading hand work."

"I am a Ngemba man from Brewarrina NSW. I have worked in SLHD for one year my current role is Security Officer. I got told through the Koori grapevine (word of mouth) that Concord hospital was looking for Indigenous security officers so I forwarded my resume on to Concord HR and was interviewed, tested and told I was successful for a casual security position. Things I enjoy most about working in SLHD are the friendly staff, flexible hours, positive changes throughout all departments and also that I'm permanent and can take holidays as I wasn't able to do that as a casual. The steps I took to get into the role I'm in today was being active and punctual throughout my role, inquiring about a full-time role my manager forwarded my request on to HR and a role came up which I was put through to become permanent full-time. Since starting with SLHD I have attained a permanent position, completed on-going training and made good working relationships with staff where they know they can rely on me as I am customer friendly and follow procedures correctly."
