Anatomical Pathology

About Us

The Anatomical Pathology Department provides a comprehensive service in Histopathology, General Cytology and Electron Microscopy for Concord Hospital and Canterbury Hospital, and also receives specimens and referrals from several private hospitals and private practices. The department is also the referral centre for Electron Microscopy in NSW

Our Services

Tests include routine Histopathology, Cytopathology and Electron Microscopy. Special tests include frozen sections, Fine Needle Aspiration, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry and adult autopsies. There is a 24 hour on-call service for urgent cases.

Areas of specialty in the department include fine needle aspiration cytology, general non-gynaecological cytology, gastro-intestinal pathology, urological pathology, neoplastic neuropathology, renal pathology, pulmonary pathology, dermatopathology, breast pathology, mineralised bone pathology, haematopathology and soft tissue tumour pathology. In addition to diagnostic pathology, the department engages in numerous multidisciplinary team meetings with clinical colleagues of all specialties, including both medical and surgical subspecialties. This meeting forms a crucial part in patient management. This is where the pathology results are discussed with all relevant clinicians involved with the patient in order to provide the best management suited for that patient.

The Electron Microscope (EM) Unit is one of the three units in NSW and is also the largest unit. Concord Hospital EM unit is the referral centre for the state and also for certain cases from overseas. Referred cases include renal, CADASIL, platelets, muscle, nerve, tumour and cilia amongst others.

The Anatomical Pathology Museum is located at the Sydney University Medical Education Centre at Concord Hospital. This museum is a great learning resource and for teaching particularly for the Sydney University medical students. However, this is also used by other specialty registrars such as surgical and radiology registrars in preparation for their fellowship exams. The pathology museum houses a broad range of specimens, covering almost all organ systems and illustrating both common and uncommon pathological diseases.
