Pre Admission Clinic

All patients admitted for elective orthopaedic surgery are required to attend pre admission clinic approximately two weeks prior to surgery.

Location

The Pre admission clinic is located on the fourth floor of the Medical Centre. You will be sent an information package prior to coming in to pre admission clinic.

How Long Will It Take ?

Your visit to the pre admission clinic may take up to 4 or 5 hours.

Why Do I Need To Attend Pre Admission Clinic ?

By attending pre admission clinic it ensures that you are medically well enough to have your operation. A thorough assessment of your current and past medical history is taken so that any problems can be identified and further tests/ treatment can be ordered. You are also able to discuss any concerns that you may have about your operation or hospitalisation with a range of expert staff.

What Happens At Pre Admission Clinic

At pre admission clinic you will be seen by:

Anaesthetic Doctor – the anaesthetic doctor will discuss with you your anaesthetic, your pain relief after the operation and any medical conditions that you may have, for example heart or lung problems.
They will answer any questions that you may have about the anaesthetic.

Orthopaedic Doctor – the orthopaedic doctor will be one of the doctors who work for your surgeon. The orthopaedic doctor will do a thorough examination and medical history.

 Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) – the orthopaedic CNC will assist in the coordination of your care throughout your hospital stay.  In the preadmission clinic the CNC will discuss with you a number of things including:

  • Your current living arrangements – discussing the set up of your house and what support you will have when you return home
  • What will happen when you go home from hospital
  • Your discharge date from hospital
  • The CNC can also arrange accommodation in the patient hostel if required the night before your surgery

You will also have a number of tests performed at pre admission clinic. These include:

  • Blood tests
  • Skin swabs to check for infections
  • ECG (Electrocardiogram) – a test on your heart
  • X-rays of your chest and of your affected limb.

The doctors may also send you for additional tests if required.
