What is the Education Session 'Get Fit'?

We believe that a better prepared patient has a faster recovery.

It is highly recommended that you do attend.  Our data has shown that patients who attend the education session have reduced anxiety and a smoother transition from hospital to home.

You have probably heard different stories about what happens after surgery – so come along and hear what really happens with your recovery after a joint replacement.

Patients and their families or carers are all invited to attend one of our preoperative education session for patients having a joint replacement for their hip or knee.

The classes are run by the Clinical Nurse Consultant with instructions given by the physiotherapists and occupational therapist who will be looking after you after your surgery. You will also receive a tour of the ward.

You will also meet other people who are having the same operation and will be in hospital at the same time.
The program has always been highly evaluated and found to be of great benefit from past participants.

What topics are discussed?

A variety of topics are discussed to inform you for your up and coming operation.  They include:

  • How long you will be in hospital for
  • How to prepare yourself for theatre
  • What to bring into hospital with you
  • Pain management – Maximise your pain control
  • A day to day look at what takes place on the ward during your recovery.  For example: when do I start to Walk? When can I have a shower? Etc
  • Physiotherapy: Crutches, going home
  • Discharge Planning – What supports are available when I get home, Should I organise for someone to come and stay with me?

All these questions will be answered
