Fractures / Broken Bones

What is a Fracture?

A fracture is commonly referred to as a ‘break’ in the bone.  Whether you have a complete fracture or partial fracture, you have a broken bone.

How Do Fractures Happen?

There are a variety of ways and reasons for people fracturing their bones.  The most common causes are:

  • Trauma – A fall, a sports injury or a motor vehicle accident
  • Osteoporosis – A bone disease that causes the bones to become thin and weak.
  • Overuse – Commonly seen in athletes that results in stress fractures.

How Do I Know If I Have Broken My Bone?

  • You may hear a snap or cracking sound
  • The area around the fracture will be swollen and be tender to touch
  • The limb that has been fractured may be deformed
  • Part of the bone may be punctured through the skin

The doctor will diagnose your fracture by taking an X-ray.

How is My Fracture Treated?

The doctor will discuss the best treatment option for the type of fracture, however there are two types of methods used to hold your fracture in the correct position while your bone begins to heal

1. External Fixation

  • Plaster
  • Cast
  • Splint
  • Other devices

2. Internal Fixation

  • Broken pieces of bone brought (united) in position with metal pins, plates or screws while your bone heals

How long will My Fracture Take to Heal?

Healing can take from several weeks to months, depending on the degree of injury and what type of fixation was used.
It is important to follow the surgeon’s advice.
