About Brain Cancer

• 1600 Australians are diagnosed every year
• 1 person dies every 8 hours
• It is the biggest cancer killer of children and the biggest cancer killer of adults under 40
• Whilst death rates from common cancers have decreased by 30% since the 1980s, death rates from Brain Cancer have not.
• Brain cancer is not preventable by any known lifestyle changes and there has been no significant improvement in survival rates for almost 30 years.

Brain Cancer research receives less than 5% of government cancer funding

Progress from medical research is inextricably coupled to the amount of funding available. While the government allows for research funding in their budget, most of this money is directed towards research for the more common cancers and conditions (breast, lung, melanoma, cardiovascular disease, and stroke).

Recent Cancer Council figures show that cancer deaths for the common cancers have diminished by 30% since the 1980s, but unfortunately this does not apply to brain cancer.
