Professional Development & Other Information

Hospital Grand Rounds
All of the hospitals within the RPA Network run weekly grand rounds sessions which are an additional learning opportunity providing trainees with the latest clinical updates, robust inter-disciplinary discussion and a chance to polish their presentation skills.

These presentations often provide trainees with the opportunity to observe and to be part of clinical discussions with senior clinicians and contributes greatly to preparation for examinations and future practice.

Acute Medicine Course
The timely identification and management of the critically unwell patient is a vital skill for each trainee. Early each year an Acute Medicine Course is run by the Intensive Care Department at RPAH, specifically for basic physician trainees. This course is made available for each medical registrar (not on rural secondment) with protected, paid study leave. It provides a comprehensive program covering a variety of topics on the care of the critically unwell and unstable medical patient.

Advanced Life Support Skills Training
Each medical registrar will receive both comprehensive training and regular assessment in advanced life support. All trainees commencing as a BPT with the RPA network will be expected to have current ALS certificates. We will provide an opportunity for those who require it in October/November each year, prior to commencement in the Network.

Professional Development Program
Professional development is a critical aspect of our careers as doctors, and is a lifelong process. Unfortunately, due to the arduous preparation for the FRACP examinations, this component of registrar training is often overlooked in Australia.

The RPA Network Professional Development Program aims to provide trainees with the skills required for practice as advanced trainees and physicians. These include Clinical Teaching Training, a course designed to help improve teaching skills and a presentation skills workshop to enhance skills in presentation, whether this is at a department meeting or international conference. We also run an interactive CV writing skills and interview skills workshop just before advanced training interviews in August. Other workshops include ethical practice, leadership, conflict resolution, clinical governance and quality assurance.

Protected Teaching Time
Teaching sessions held throughout the year, either in the mornings (7:30-8:30am) Tuesday Journal Club/Long Case Lunch (12:30 - 1:30pm) or Thursday afternoons (3:30-5:30pm) are protected teaching times.

MD OK
MDOK aims to drive cultural and systemic change in health, and reduce stress and burnout among junior and senior doctors. Please click here for more info.
