Welcome to the Department of Endocrinology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA).
Patients need a referral from their General Practitioner or Medical Specialist to access Department services.
We help adult patients and their primary care team manage endocrine disorders through the following services:
- Diabetes Centre helps manage:
- type 1 diabetes
- type 2 diabetes
- diabetes in pregnancy
- diabetic complications including foot ulceration
- atypical diabetes
- steroid-induced diabetes
- diabetes technology
- diabetes of the endocrine pancreas
- new onset diabetes after transplant
- Endocrinology and Metabolism Centre
helps manage:
- pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal neuroendocrine disorders
- thyroid cancer
- antenatal thyroid care
- metabolic bone disease
- certain sex hormone disorders
also performs:
- bone densitometry scans
- highly specialised dynamic endocrine tests
- Metabolism and Obesity Service helps manage:
- obesity and complex metabolic disorders
- patients with Prader-Willi syndrome
- bariatric surgery planning and post-operative care
- Specialised multidisciplinary clinics including:
- Diabetes and Liver Clinic
- Cystic Fibrosis Endocrine and Diabetes Clinic
- Graves' Eye Disease Clinic
Research and analysis
The Department of Endocrinology integrates diabetes and endocrine research and specialised hormonal analyses through the following laboratories:
- The Greg Brown Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Laboratory located in Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney and focuses on:
- translational research
- analyzing samples of metabolic disorders using the latest molecular techniques
- establishing models of human diseases in diabetes
- identifying thyroid and prostate cancer molecular markers and treatments
- The Diagnostic Laboratory is located within the RPA Hospital's chemical pathology laboratory, which is part of the NSW Health pathology service. In the Diagnostic Laboratory, we perform specialised hormonal analyses and develop novel diagnostic tests.
