Bone Densitometry Testing
Bone mineral densitometry (BMD or DXA) imaging
BMD uses low dose x-ray to determine whether a patient has osteoporosis. The amount of radiation is lower than a chest x-ray. This is a non-invasive test and no injection is needed.
This is different from a Bone Scan, which is a nuclear medicine imaging.
Important points to remember:
- A valid referral is required and the test has to be booked beforehand.
- Medicare covers this test in certain conditions. Check with your doctor if you qualify. A fee may be payable on the day if your condition is not covered.
- BMD may be repeated in 12 or 24 months depending on the underlying condition.
- The bone density machine has a weight limit of 227kg.
- To complete the test, you may need to lie flat with one pillow for up to 15 minutes.
- If you are or think you could be pregnant, please inform the staff before proceeding with this test.
