Co Chair Welcome

Academic surgery at RPA, in partnership with the University of Sydney, has a proud and brilliant history. We are honoured to be appointed as the inaugural Co-Chairs of the RPA Institute of Academic Surgery (IAS) and to have the opportunity of leading academic surgery forward within this great campus.

Since being established in 2014, the IAS  has adopted new strategies and interventions to encourage and motivate all surgery-related staff to be involved in the development of academic surgery, which is a vital component for the provision of comprehensive tertiary and quaternary healthcare at RPA.

RPA continues to uphold the longstanding reputation for high-quality surgical services and it has been great to see surgical departments and staff at RPA embrace and utilise the developments being proposed by the IAS.

Focusing on the key areas of academic career development, patient care, research, and education, the work of the IAS encompasses medical, nursing and allied health surgical research and education as well as spanning the full range of surgical and other non-surgical related specialties.

The knowledge and evidence being generated by the IAS is already having a positive influence on policy and guideline development, and contributes significantly toward further improving academic careers, surgical practice and patient outcomes.

We would like to extend considerable thanks to the Sydney Local Health District, RPA, the University of Sydney and the surgical departments at RPA for providing the Institute with their ongoing support and trust, and for the benefit of their expertise.

We pride ourselves on being inclusive and encourage any staff members interested in surgical research or education to actively participate in the IAS. Together we are working towards IAS being a world-leading centre for academic surgery.
