About the Department

The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) Ophthalmology Department provides high-quality care to people with diseases of the eye and visual system. Our team consists of doctors, orthoptists and nurses, including 17 specialist eye surgeons who undertake more than 500 operations per year and deliver care to over 4,000 ambulatory care patients annually. We also provide extensive consultations to other disciplines and patients at RPAH.

Achievements

  • Equipped with state-of-the-art intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to visualise the retina
  • Offer the novel glaucoma surgery implant, “PreserFlo MicroShunt”
  • Home to the finest surgical equipment including the Alcon Centurion for cataract surgery and Alcon Constellation for vitrectomy surgery
  • One of the first hospitals in Australia to coordinate multidisciplinary meetings for thyroid eye disease
  • One of the few hospitals in Australia to coordinate multidisciplinary meetings for ocular genetics

  • High intraocular pressure and glaucoma, including modern evaluation techniques using artificial intelligence and novel treatments such as nutrient supplementation and minimally invasive surgery

Key Education & Training Activities

  • Offer Ophthalmology placements to medical students undertaking the Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) course at the University of Sydney
  • Host Ophthalmology teaching sessions through ‘RPAH Eye School’ for interested junior doctors and registrars
  • Our team consists of course convenors and examiners to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO)
