About the Department

The ophthalmology department is one of the largest ophthalmological teaching units in Australia and provides quaternary level care to patients with the diseases of the eye and visual system. The team of nine specialist eye surgeons undertake more than 500 operations and deliver care to more than 4,000 ambulatory care patients annually, along with providing extensive consultations to other disciplines and patients at RPA.

The Ophthalmology outpatient clinic provides subspecialist care for all types of eye diseases and conditions.
We provide medical and/or surgical management of most eye conditions including:

  • Eye emergency and eye trauma
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic eye problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Retinal and vitreous disorders and conditions
  • Strabismus and Eye Muscle problems
  • Cornea, Pterygium and ocular surface diseases
  • Uveitis (Inflammation within the eye)
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Eyelid, tear duct and eye socket problems
