In terms of governance, the RPA surgical departments are supported by the Division of Surgery, which has a medical focus and meets on a monthly basis to provide oversight of strategic issues within surgery.

In addition, monitoring and management of surgical activity within operating theatres is provided by the Operating Theatre Management Committee, which also meets on a monthly basis and has a multidisciplinary and multi-specialty focus.

The aim of the IAS is to enhance the academic standing of each surgical department so that surgical research and educational activities are undertaken as a matter of routine, and that structures are in place to support and recognise the ongoing pursuit of academia.
