About Us

Renal medicine, or nephrology, involves the care of patients with all forms of kidney disease. A major part of the work of renal specialists is the management of patients with acute kidney injury or advanced chronic kidney disease. This may involve renal replacement therapy, by dialysis or kidney transplant.

The Renal Department at CRGH is staffed by experts in all aspects of renal care.  Staff in the unit have a long and proud history of patient care in the local area, as well as national and international standing in various fields of kidney research.  Strong ties with the University of Sydney and The George Institute for Global Health, as well as local General Practitioner networks help maintain and improve individual patient outcomes.

The Department of Renal Medicine provides a fully integrated service to patients within the Sydney Local Health District.  This includes:

  • Public Outpatient Services
  • General Nephrology, Hypertension, Metabolic/Diabetic Kidney Disease, Stones, Inherited Disorders, Infections, Pre- and Ongoing Dialysis (peritoneal and haemodialysis) Care, Pre- and Post-Transplantation Assessment and follow-up, Renal Supportive Care, Nurse-Led Education
  • Full Inpatient Services with 24hr support
  • In-Centre and Satellite Haemodialysis
  • Home Peritoneal and Haemodialysis Training Services, utilising the Home Dialysis Training Unit at Camperdown and Home Visits

Clinical excellence is maintained through collaboration, teaching, quality assurance, research activities and outreach services.
