Concord PC2 Skin Laboratory
The Skin Laboratory service is a clinical facility with cutting-edge technologies of skin tissue cultivation and skin substitute technology. The Skin Laboratory was established in 2001 to grow autologous skin cells and alternative skin graft for severe burn management. The fully GMP certified facility has been constructed within the surgical theatre complex in our burns centre with a purpose-designed, well-equipped clean room and quality monitoring system for the production of cultured cells for clinical application. This laboratory supplies cultured cellular products to all three NSW burn centres under the NSW Severe Burn Injury Service (SBIS), including Concord Hospital, Westmead Children's Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital and to other hospitals in NSW on a case-by-case agreement.
Burns and Reconstructive Surgery Research Group

The Burns and Reconstructive Surgery Research Group focuses on comprehensive investigations within burns, reconstructive surgery and plastic surgery care, with a specific emphasis on translational research in skin tissue engineering. The team is composed of a dynamic group of medical officers and scientists, working closely together and in collaboration with multiple national and international partners, ranging from universities to industry parties. Our laboratory is dedicated to advancing techniques used in burns and reconstructive surgery, translating solutions into the clinical setting to improve the care and quality of life of our patients. Utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as tissue culture, cell biology, molecular biology, cellular and tissue engineering, we strive to produce biologically compatible and safe skin equivalents for the treatment of wounds and scarring. The skin tissue engineered solutions that are created in our laboratory facilitate skin cell attachment and growth. The goal is to repair damaged dermal beds and engineer autologous skin substitutes with an individualised approach that replicate the structures of normal human skin, including epidermis, dermal components, pigment cells, and microvascular vessels, all under laboratory conditions. The research is facilitated by the Burns and Reconstructive Surgery Skin Biobank, which collects skin tissue that would otherwise be discarded, the first biobank in NSW that collects healthy human skin tissue for the purpose of creating skin tissue engineered solutions. By maintaining a close relationship between the laboratory and clinical setting, the Burns and Reconstructive Surgery Research Group aims to bridge the gap from benchtop to the bedside, enabling translational research to improve the outcomes for all patients suffering from burn injuries, and other soft tissue and skin loss.
